N.C. Groups Receive Funding to Promote Recreation, Nutrition

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, the National Park Service and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation have received a $200,000 grant to launch a multi-faceted program to promote the Blue Ridge Parkway as a recreational resource, GoBlueRidge.net reports. Awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the two-year grant will fund efforts to engage children and their families in activities that increase physical activity and promote a healthy diet. The program will pilot in Asheville, N.C., but is expected to eventually span the entire length of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway. A regional advisory board, chaired by Olson Huff of the Task Force on Obesity and Nutrition of the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission, will oversee the program (Hicks, GoBlueRidge.net, 1/15/09; National Park Service release, 1/15/09).
