The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has awarded $4.8 million to 21 faith-based organizations to help prevent childhood obesity, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports. The funding was awarded to help the groups advance policy and environmental changes designed to increase access to healthy foods and physical activity opportunities in the communities they serve. Among the recipients, the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi received $216,638 to support Healthy Congregations, a program under its Get a Life! campaign, which targets childhood obesity. As part of the program, the organization will sponsor a Healthy Congregations regional conference in October and other activities that engage community members in making environmental changes to prevent childhood obesity. Other grant recipients include a San Diego-based coalition of youth, faith leaders and Latino outreach workers, who will use the funding to support an effort to improve the safety, aesthetics and physical structures of playgrounds and parks in the community and a group based in Hartford, Conn. that is working to create sustainable access to fresh produce (Crum, Memphis Commercial Appeal, 1/15/09; Crosby, PNN Online, 1/15/09; RWJF press release, 1/12/09).
