The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has unveiled a new Web site designed to help parents and caregivers meet the nutritional needs of children between ages 2 and 5, HealthDay News reports. Developed by the USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, the MyPyramid for Preschoolers Web site provides nutrition guidance consistent with current scientific research and the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Web site features a series of topic areas, including guidance on how to develop healthy eating habits in children and plan appropriate meals and snacks for preschoolers. Using the Web site's MyPyramid Plan tool, visitors can access a number of interactive features, including tools to calculate their child's body mass index and create customized meal plans, as well as height-for-age charts. In addition, the Web site offers guidance on appropriate physical activity levels for preschoolers and suggests tips on how to encourage physical activity (HealthDay News, 12/13/08; USDA release, 10/23/08).
