FCC Commissioner Calls for Ban on Interactive Advertising to Children

Federal Communications Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein recommends banning interactive advertising targeting children, Broadcasting & Cable reports. Speaking at a forum on childhood obesity, Adelstein also said the agency should develop a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about health literacy, healthy food choices and parental controls. The forum at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville came at the same time that an FCC task force convened there to discuss the effect of television programming on childhood obesity rates. The group includes representatives from Disney and Sesame Workshop. “With the growing convergence of TV and the Internet, [officials] need to set the rules before interactive advertising becomes an established business model,†Adelstein said." He proposed that the FCC request additional funding from Congress to help cover the cost of the proposed public awareness campaign (Eggerton, Broadcasting & Cable, 10/17/08; NewsChannel5.com, 10/14/08).
