A North Carolina collaborative has unveiled a resource designed to help after-school providers meet physical activity guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, WRAL reports. Drafted by the Move More After-School Collaborative, a group of after-school providers, funders and community partners, the guide suggests small changes programs can make to help children engage in physical activity for at least 60 minutes daily. The standards are voluntary, but adoption is highly recommended for after-school programs. According to the chief of the Chronic Disease and Injury Section in the N.C. Division of Public Health, North Carolina is the first state to develop a comprehensive set of standards for physical activity in after-school programs (WRAL, 4/30/09; North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services release, 4/30/09).
