The nonprofit California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has awarded 29 California schools gifts of $1,000 each for their participation in its ongoing 2009 Governor’s Challenge Competition, KCBA.com reports. The annual competition challenges students in kindergarten through 12th grade to engage in physical activity for 30 to 60 minutes a day, three days per week, for four weeks. The Front Runner Recognition Awards acknowledge schools that have implemented unique strategies aimed at engaging students in physical activity. For example, Fremont Elementary School in Alhambra was recognized for launching a running club for students, while Daniel Webster Elementary School in Pasadena earned a reward for using local chefs to educate students about proper diet and nutrition. When the competition concludes on May 31, three schools will be awarded a new fitness center. In addition, 11 schools will receive $5,000 worth of new physical activity equipment. According to the executive director of the Governor’s Council, 325,000 students from 1,000 schools are participating in this year’s Governor’s Challenge (KCBA.com, 4/14/09; Gale, Turlock Journal, 4/25/09; Hong, Pasadena Star-News, 4/28/09; Emerson, Contra Costa Times, 4/22/09; California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness Web site).
