Last year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided Arizona with roughly $960,000 in grants that helped 25 schools in the state participate in the agency's fresh fruits and vegetables program, the Arizona Republic reports. The grants have helped school districts fund the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables, which they are encouraged to purchase from local growers wherever possible. In an expansion of the program, the state will have $1.45 million to distribute for the upcoming school year. According to the Republic, this year the grants were directed toward students in kindergarten through 8th grade, a strategy that federal experts anticipate will introduce healthy eating habits to students earlier in life and help reduce childhood obesity rates. School lunch directors, however, would like the program to be expanded to include high school students, a population they say is among the highest consumers of junk food (Gersema, Arizona Republic, 4/25/09).
