NIH Partners with Subway Restaurants on Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative

Subway Restaurants has partnered with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to promote the agency's We Can! program, which aims to help children develop healthy nutrition and physical activity habits, 9news.com reports. Launched in June 2005, We Can!, which stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition, seeks to bring families and communities together to prevent overweight and obesity in children ages 8 to 13. Through the partnership, Subway will promote the messages and resources of We Can! in restaurants and on a Subway Web site geared toward children. In addition, Subway and NIH have joined with Scholastic Inc. to adapt We Can! materials into educational tools and activities for teachers, students and parents. To extend the community outreach of We Can!, Subway also will fund programs to train community-based educators and leaders to implement the We Can! curricula. Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle, boxing champion Laila Ali, soccer star Tab Ramos and the acting principal deputy director of NIH will promote the program (Barber, 9news.com, 4/2/09; NIH release, 3/24/09).
