Northern California Health Plan Translating Childhood Obesity Prevention Program into Spanish

The California-based Health Plan of San Mateo is working to translate a childhood obesity prevention program into Spanish to better serve Latino children, who have higher obesity rates than children of other ethnic backgrounds, the San Mateo County Times reports. Currently available in English only, the Shapedown weight management program pairs families with a registered dietician to learn about healthy eating habits, improved nutrition and the importance of daily exercise. Health plan officials decided to translate the materials after recognizing that more than 30 percent of the population they serve speaks primarily Spanish. To support the translation initiative, the organization has secured a $50,000 grant from the Peninsula Health Care District and $10,000 from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, but officials say a further $90,000 will be needed to translate Shapedown course books, handouts and other materials (Gonzales, San Mateo County Times, 5/28/08).
