Purpose:

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars program fosters the development of physicians who will lead the transformation of America's health care. These future leaders will conduct innovative research and work with communities, organizations, practitioners and policy-makers on issues important to the health and well-being of all Americans. Program highlights include:

• leadership training;
• mentoring;
• protected research time;
• national networking;
• health services and community-based research training; and
• financial support for research projects and professional travel.

Total Awards:

Up to 29 scholars will be selected in 2008 for appointments beginning in 2009. First year scholar stipend is no less than $50,000 per year with an increase the second year. Additional financial support is provided for research projects and professional travel.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

To be eligible physicians must:

• be committed to a career in academic medicine, health policy or another career congruent with the program's purposes and priorities of developing physician leaders;
• be highly regarded by those responsible for their clinical training;
• intend to complete the clinical requirements of their residency/fellowship training by the date of entry into the program (except for surgeons). Scholars may not hold appointments as subspecialty fellows during their tenure in the program; and
• be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its territories.

Key Dates:

• February 29, 2008—Deadline for receipt of applications.
• April 18, 2008—Interviews completed.
• June 20–30, 2008—Notification of acceptance.
• July 1, 2009—Entry of scholars into the program at participating universities.
