Purpose:

Pipeline, Profession and Practice: Community-Based Dental Education helps dental schools improve access to oral health care in underserved communities. Round 2 of this program aims to do this by:

  • recruiting and retaining underrepresented minority and low-income students; or
  • strengthening existing community-based service learning programs for senior students and residents.

Program Information:

Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

  • All accredited dental schools in the United States and Puerto Rico are eligible to apply. A minimum of $50,000/year in matching funds is required.
  • Applicant organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are eligible to apply.

Key Dates:

  • September 27, 2007 (12 noon ET)—Technical assistance conference call for potential applicants. Participation is strongly encouraged; registration is required. Details can be found on the program’s Web site at www.dentalpipeline.org.
  • October 19, 2007 (3 p.m. ET)—Deadline for receipt of full proposals.
  • November 27–29, 2007—Reverse site visits (Philadelphia).
  • February 15, 2008—Notification of awards.
  • March 1, 2008—Start of grants.

Total Award:

  • Up to eight dental schools will be funded with 27-month grants of up to $200,000 each.
  • Up to four awards each will be made in one of two focus areas, and schools must select only one focus area. Schools previously supported in Round 1 are eligible to participate in Round 2, only if they are part of, or lead, a multischool recruitment or community-based collaborative.
